Data Handling
Introduction
In our earlier classes, we were told how to collect the data and represent it in the form of pictograph so
that everybody could understand it better. We call these pictographs as Bar graphs. In this class, we will
review our knowledge about bar graphs and pictographs and in addition to that we shall learn how to
interpret the data given in the form of a bar graph.
Data
What is data?
Data is a collection of pieces of information.
Organising Data
After collecting the data there is a need to organise it. For this different methods can be adopted. We can
choose the appropriate method according to our requirements.
Suppose, a factory owner wants to place an order for the dresses for 35 workers of his factory. To serve
this purpose, he needs to know the heights of his workers. He asks his manager to do so.
The manager calls the workers one by one, measures them and notes down their heights to the nearest
centimetre as given below:
Table-1
171 168 175 174 175 181 175
168 172 171 168 172 174 181
168 171 181 174 175 172 174
174 168 171 181 172 175 171
172 175 174 174 174 171 172
Now, form this form of data the manager was unable to find the answers of some questions like:
(i) What are the small est and larg est size of dress?
(ii) How many dresses are required for each size?
