Comparison of Decimals
            To compare the two decimal numbers, we first compare the whole part, if the whole parts are equal, we

            compare the tenth parts. If the tenth parts are also equal, then we compare the hundredth part and so on.

            EXAMPLE 1. Compare the following decimals:
                          (a) 2.467 and 2.468            (b)   3.45 and 3.56             (c) 8.35 and 9.15
            SOLUTION :    (a) 2.467 or 2.468
                               Compare the whole part of 2.467 and 2.468,

                                                              2 = 2
                               They are same, so we compare tenth part of 2.467 and 2.468,

                                                              4 =  4
                               Now, we will compare hundredth part of 2.467 and 2.468,
                                                              6 =  6

                               Hundredth part is also same, so we compare thousandth part,
                                                              7 8<

                               Hence,                    2.467 < 2.468
                          (b) 3.45 or 3.56
                               Compare the whole part of 3.45 and 3.56,

                                                              3 = 3
                               So, we compare tenth part of 3.45 and 3.56,
                               Q                              4 5<

                               So,                           3.56 < 3.45
                          (c) 8.35 or 9.15
                               Compare the whole part of 8.35 and 9.15,

                                                              8 < 9
                               So,                          8.35 < 9.15

                                                    Application of Decimals

            The commonly used measuring units can be converted into decimals for our convenience, e g. ., 2 kg and
            500 g can be read as 2.5 kg.

            Length
            To convert smaller units into bigger units, we divide by the number of smaller units present in one bigger
            unit, i e. . we know that 100 cm = 1 m.
            So, to convert 20 cm into m, we divide
                                                                20
                                 20 100¸        or                   = 0.2 m
                                                               100

                                                20 cm = 0.2 m
