Conversion of Decimals to Fractions
To convert a decimal number into a fraction, remove the decimal and write the number as the numerator.
To form the denominator, put 1 under the decimal sign affix as many zeros after 1 as the number of digits
to the right of decimal. Reduce to the lowest form.
            e g. ., Convert 27.761 into fraction.

The number of digits to the right of decimal are three, so the denominator will be 1000.
                                                          27761
                                                27.761 =
                                                          1000

                                             Conversion of Fractions to Decimals
To convert fraction into decimal either use normal division or convert the denominator in powers of 10 by
multiplying numerator as well as denominator by suitable number.

EX AM PLE 1. Represent 1.4 on num ber line.

                                                                      1.4

                                         0 1 P 2
                                                                        10 parts

SOLUTION : We know that 1.4 lies between 1 and 2 so we divide the gap between 1 and 2 into 10 equal
parts and take 4th part to represent 1.4. Point P represents 1.4
EX AM PLE 2. Write the fol low ing dec i mals in place value chart:
                          (a) 36.2 (b) 254.73 (c) 24.608
SOLUTION : Let’s us rep re sent the fol low ing num bers in the place value chart:

                                        H T O × tenth hundredth thousandth
                             (a) 3 6 . 2

                             (b) 2 5 4 . 7 3

                              (c) 2 4 . 6 0 8

EXAMPLE 3. Write the following as decimal:
                                   3 8 8
                                                                     2
                                                                                                   8
                          (a) 27 (b) 600 + + (c) 70 + +
                                  10 10 10
                                   3
            SOLUTION : (a) 27 = 27 + 0.3 = 27.3
                                  10
                                          8
                                      2
                          (b) 600 + + = 602 + 0.8 = 602.8
                                         10
                                         8
                                    8
                          (c) 70 + + = 78 + 0.8 = 78.8
                                        10
