Perimeter and Area
Introduction
Imagine trying to fence your garden to protect it from
animals or trying to determine how much paint you need
for a wall of your study room without having knowledge of
measurement and shapes. This lesson designed to help
you develop formulae and procedures for finding the
perimeter and area of rectangles and squares. You will
learn how to find the perimeter and area of some plane
figures you see around in the classroom and at home. This
will help you to discover the importance of measurement
skills and their application in daily situations.
Perimeter
If we have to build a wall around a field, we need to know the length of the wall to be built. This length of
the wall along the boundary is called the perimeter of the field. It depends on the size and shape of the
field.
Look at the fields (i)-(vi), given in Figure. If a wall is built around (i), (ii), (iii) and (iv) the boundaries will
be closed. This length of the wall is called the perimeter. However, in fields (v) and (iv), the boundaries
are not closed. The lengths of the walls in such cases are not called perimeter.
(i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi)
Applications of Perimeter in Daily Life
The concept of perimeter is widely used in our daily life.
u A farmer when fence his field, he uses the concept of perimeter.
u A mason when builds a compound wall on all sides of a house/office, he uses the concept of
perimeter.
u A woman when puts a border on a quit, she uses the concept of perimeter.
u A Photo-framer when puts a frame around a photo, he uses the concept of perimeter; etc.
