P. 148
Observe the figures given below.
(a) (b)
Which figure has more area?
This can be done by placing them on squared paper or graph paper where every square has 1 cm ´ 1 cm
dimensions. The area is the number of cm squares covered by the figure on the squared paper. Before we
proceed we must remember the following points:
1. The area of one full square is taken to be 1 sq. unit.
1
2. The area of exactly half square is taken to be sq. unit.
2
3. The area of squares less than half are taken as 0.
4. The area of squares more than half are taken as 1 sq. unit.
EXAMPLE 1. Find the area of the figure given below:
SOLUTION : Let us count the number of squares:
Number of full squares = 10
Number of half squares = 0
Number of squares more than half = 2
Number of squares less than half = 4

Thus, total area covered is 10 ´ + 2 ´ + 4 0´ = 10 + 1 11 sq. cm.

EXAMPLE 2. Find the area of the figure given below:
SOLUTION : Let us count the number of squares:
Number of full squares = 10
Number of half squares = 0
Number of squares more than half = 2
Number of squares less than half = 4
