5. Circle

               6. Pentagon

EXAMPLE 1. Classify the following figures as symmetrical or asymmetrical:

                                 (a) (b) (c) (d) (e)

SOLUTION : Fig. (a) and (e) are symmetrical.
EXAMPLE 2. Draw the/lines of symmetry for the following

                          historical monument.
            SOLUTION :

                                                                                                           X

EXAMPLE 3. Find the line of symmetry for a line segment AB.

SOLUTION : Draw a line segment AB and construct its perpendicular O
                                                                                                A B
                          bisector XY.
The line XY is the line of symmetry.

                                                                                                           Y
EXAMPLE 4. How many lines of symmetry a rectangle has?

SOLUTION : Draw a rectangle ABCD and mark the midpoints of all its
                          sides. A P D

If we fold the rectangle along PR, we observe that the two
parts coincide with each other. Q S
Also, fold it along QS. We find that the two parts of its
                                                                                             B R C
                          coincide with each other.
Thus, a rectangle has two axes of symmetry.
