Kind of Fractions
1. Unit Fraction : A fraction which has 1 as the numerator is called a unit fraction.
1 1 1 1 1
For example : , , , , , etc. are unit fractions.
2 3 4 9 20
2. Proper Fraction : A fraction in which the numerator is less than the denominator is called proper
fraction. The value of a proper fraction is less than 1.
1 3 7 10
For example : , , , , etc. are proper fractions.
2 5 9 12
3. Improper Fraction : A fraction in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator is
called improper fraction. The value of an improper fraction is greater or equal to 1.
3 5 4 7 9
For example : , , , , , etc. are improper fractions.
2 4 4 5 9
4. Mixed Fraction : A fraction has a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction is called mixed
fraction.
1 2 7
For example : 7 , 3 , 9 , etc. are all the mixed fractions.
3 3 16
5. Like Fraction : Fractions having the same denominator but different numerator are called like
fractions.
3 1 2 4 5
For example : , , , , , etc. are like fractions.
7 7 7 7 7
6. Unlike Fraction : Fractions having different denominators are called unlike fractions.
5 7 3 1
For example : , , , , etc. are unlike fractions.
9 8 4 3
7. Equivalent Fraction : Two or more fractions that represent the same amount are called equivalent
fractions. Thus, the numerator and denominator of a given fraction is multiplied or divided by the same
number, the fraction so obtained is equivalent to the original fraction. It is to be noted that the value of
both the fractions is the same.
