Fractions
Introduction
We have learnt in previous classes that if a thing is divided into some equal parts,
one or more part are known as fractional parts of the whole thing.
For example, Reeta made a cake at her home. She divided it into eight equal parts.
She gave three parts to her son. These three parts are shaded in the given figure.
Thus, we can say that these three parts are three-eight of the whole cake. In

numeral form, we denote it as (read as three by eight).

Here, is a fraction and three-eight is a fractional number.

The numeral above the dividing line or bar is called numerator and the numeral below the dividing line or
bar is called denominator.

In fraction , there is the numerator = 3 and denominator = 8.

The Concept of Fractions
A fraction is a part of a whole object. The whole may be a single object or group of objects. The number of
equal parts into which the whole has been divided is called the denominator. The number of equal parts
which have taken out or selected is called the numerator. Thus, a fraction can be written as:
