Preface...
It is a known fact that concrete experiences are essential for forming a strong base for
mathematical concepts. Students are being encouraged to discover the world of numbers and
number concepts through activities. We, thus, follow a learner-centred pedagogy where a child
learns from concrete sensory experiences through objects and pictures that depict the
mathematical concepts before he/she is able to put them into words and symbols.
Understanding Mathematics is a series which form a complete primary mathematics package.
The series focuses on teaching the child mathematical skills, which can be apply used to solve
everyday practical problems and prepare him/her for future academic pursuits.
Under the current guidelines suggested by the NCERT, evaluation of students is no longer limited
to rigid question-answer type exams held at the end of a term or end of an year. A child’s progress
is evaluated throughout the academic session. For this, multiple non-formal methods like;
assignments, projects, surveys, experiments and quizzes are to be used.
