Preface...

It is a known fact that concrete experiences are essential for forming a strong base for
mathematical concepts. Students are being encouraged to discover the world of numbers and
number concepts through activities. We, thus, follow a learner-centred pedagogy where a child
learns from concrete sensory experiences through objects and pictures that depict the
mathematical concepts before he/she is able to put them into words and symbols.

Understanding Mathematics is a series which form a complete primary mathematics package.
The series focuses on teaching the child mathematical skills, which can be apply used to solve
everyday practical problems and prepare him/her for future academic pursuits.

Under the current guidelines suggested by the NCERT, evaluation of students is no longer limited
to rigid question-answer type exams held at the end of a term or end of an year. A child’s progress
            is  evaluated  throughout  the  academic  session.  For  this,  multiple  non-formal  methods  like;
assignments, projects, surveys, experiments and quizzes are to be used.

Salient features of this book are :

Each chapter has been explained systematically followed by ample of illustrative examples

This book is helpful for weak, mediocre and intelligent students.

At the end of each chapter, there is ‘At a Glance’ which will help them to revise the chapter
                   contents.

Also given, at the end of the book, two Model Test Papers, which will help the teachers and
                   their students.

Lab Activity and HOTS Questions are included at the appropriate places to enhance and
                   review the concepts learned earlier.
Steps have been taken to visualise concept formulation, lateral thinking and creativity.

We hope that parents and teachers will give prudential consideration and adopt a realistic
approach while using this book. Any suggestions for the improvement of these books shall be

gratefully received and acknowledged and incorporated in the subsequent editions.
